10" x 12 oilWith so many color choices of paint out there, how many are just fools gold?
This is the first painting using my new choice of colors. I've been using the same base color palette for quite a long time. I've added and taken away colors for sure, but I always ended up roughly using the same ones. To understand color better and call attention to the mixing habits I've gotten over the years I decided to simplify.
I didn't want a palette so limited that you could tell . So I went for the biggest bang for the buck or the least amount of colors with maximum amount of range.
I could've just used one primary each but decided on a warm and cool of each primary, plus black and white.
My new choice of oil colors
Titanium White
Cad Yellow light
Cad Yellow Med
Cad Red Light
Quinacridone Red
Phthalo Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Ivory Black
I don't know how long this little experiment will last, but I do know I will learn something. Hell I already miss my green.

Wow, there is a difference. I know I'm no painter so I probably can't articulate it as well as another painter could but I like it. It's always good to stretch in to unfamiliar territory. Kinda like a quiet, sweet actress stretching into playing a "bad ass". ;)
Nice Parker!
I like it
Hello!
I love reading about peoples' palettes... I've found I've pined for green in greenless palettes. There's a peculiar psychology to the whole thing, cant' say I've got to the bottom of it.
Nice skelly head!
There's a certain simplicity here that I like but I think the economy of your palette is showing through a bit. It's a good exercise for sure. Chloe's comment about green I think rings true.
Anachronistic coloring...now that'd be interesting.
=s=
Love the yellow/greeny cast on the skull. Found you though Wray's wonderful blog. You do some very nice work
Nice little skull, well done they are hard to paint.
Thanks Aaron.
Chloe,Don't know what it is about green it was my go to color on the palette for some many things.
Shane, I was thinking the same thing about the palette showing through and I keep thinking if I didn't mention that I was using a more limited palette, how would you look at the painting then. But since I know I did it's hard to detach from looking at every painting I do with it now and see it. Hope that's just a phase.
David, thanks, and thanks for finding me blog.
Bill, thanks
This looks simply done and quite effective.
That's a great painting.
