this was after a 3hour open painting session.

And this after another 3 that i did last night. I got bored with the background and chair so i started throwing down some palette knife action and just playing with some dry brush-ish strokes.

This past week I got out and tried to paint this wicked little truck again. Still can't seem to get it, but I will probaly try yet again. 12 x 10 oil

Easter morning painting!
The sun was constantly coming and going and I didn't realize how cold it was outside till my painting hand started to go numb, but I did manage to get out there and give it a shot. It's super wet and juicy hence the crazy glare. 14 x 11

Another painting from the monday night 3 hour open painting session.
This last one was my first outdoor painting this year. It was overcast and ending up raining which pushed me to finish in a hurry. One thing that sucks about painting when it's overcast is that there are no hard shadows. Things tend to look very flat. All ambient light and I really never noticed this before I started painting outside years ago. Maybe thats why the great Northwest isn't known for it's outdoor Plein air painters like Souther Cali is, helps to have some sun.

Sometimes i think it's a smart idea to paint over old paintings. Getting the texture of the last painting to play with. And other times it just seems to get in the way.

Ruffin it.

I've had this painting in my heard for years, at least a vague representation of it. Scattered thumbnails here and there occupying a random sketchbook. Don't know what it is really. The image has just haunted me over the years. Recently I decided to move forward on it. Here is a small gouache sketch of it. I ended up scanning it at 200 % so I can actually see the loose abstract brush work. the current plan is to paint this in oils on a 48" x 60" canvas. Hoping I can retain some of the brushwork and looseness when going to a bigger size. I do want to get more detailed in spots, I will be watchful that I don't kill it in the process.
Also, going to be using a odd palette to slay the beast and them colors include:

Titanium white
Ivory Black
Thalo Blue
Cerulean Blue
Thalo Green
Burnt Umber
Yellow Ochre

I did these this morning at an open drawing session. I brought my little gouache set. It's always fun trying to bust out a little painting in 20 to 25 minutes. These are the only two that are actually decent egough to post. They are painted on 80 pound colored paper stock.

Well this was a pain in the arse to photgraph and I still didn't manage to get rid of glare. In spots I used a palette knife and it's rather chunky and thick. The glare on them parts tended to darken the value. Maybe I'll reshoot it later when it's fully dry. It's 48" x 24' in oil. this video here is my attmept to take a picture every ten mintues.

Little Red

So I wanted to try a do a little oil painting of a small little sketch I doodled at work the other day, sort of a trail for more to come. Wanted to see how long it will take and what not. I usually paint from life in oils and to be honest I haven't painted out of my head in oils much.

a little Saturday painting.

Painted at the Oregon Coast for 3 days.. I don't much like painting in the wind but I didn't have a choice. I went there thinking it would kick me in the mood to do some outdoor painting when i get back to Seattle. Here's what I produced on my little trip.
